Queenstown Winter Fesitval

June 18th, 2011 by

The Queenstown Winter Festival is less then a week away. The town is getting excited as the biggest winter party in the Southern Hemisphere is about to get under way.

A new feature to the fesitval this year is the tempory ice skating rink being built over Horne Creek. This will be a great focal point for the fesitval and it will give you a chance to try you hand at a bit of ice skating. The skating rink will be open from 10am till 9pm and it will cost between $10 – $22.

After a record breaking warm May Queenstown is still waiting for the snow to fall but the good news is a cold southerly is going to come up the country on Sunday which will have a cooling effect on the Southern Lakes Region and possibly even some snow.  It should give the snow making machines to work their magic.

If it’s cold enough the machines can make enough snow to open the ski fields in three days on Coronet Peak. In fact the machines on Coronet Peak make 20 tons of snow a minute. Isn’t that amazing?

Queenstown Ski Season – Where is the Snow?

June 11th, 2011 by

Where is the snow? After a un-seasonally warm Autumn there is still little snow on the hills. The ski fields and Queenstown eargerly waits the first decent fall of snow. Coronet Peak was going to open on the 4th July but the ski fields are still bare and it just hasnt been cold enough to get the snow making machines into gear.

The snow always comes however and there is hope in the forecasts. According to David Crow who is the local weather guru it should be cold enough from this weekend for the snow machines to get into full gear making the good powdery snow every one is eager for. If this forecast is correct people could be heading down the slops by the end of the week as it takes about three days for the machines to make enough snow to make it enjoyable.

During the last 10 years the opening date has ranged from June 1st to June 19th so the law of averages suggest its time to wax the snow board and find the gloves.

If you are wondering when you should book your flights and accommodation then you should be safe if you book it from July onwards. Be sure to book your accommodation soon because once the snow comes they fill up fast. You wouldn’t want to be disappointed and miss out in your snow fix now would you?

This all leads to a very busy weekend for the town with many different events held around the region. For this reason it is advised to book ahead for accommodation and any activities you wish to do to avoid any dissapointment.

So what events are held during this time of year? During the even years The War Birds Over Wanaka is held in Wanaka attracting many aviation fans to the region. This is a big event and is enjoyed by all walks of life.

If you are more the fitness type the Lake Hayes Easter Triathlon which is New Zealand’s longest running triathlon is a great way to get some exercise and see the beautiful scenery at the same time. A mountain bike event called Dirt Masters Ben Lomond Downhill is held in the Ben Lomond Forest above Queenstown. Well worth entering if your a keen mountain biker or just a good watch.

Eco-exhilaration with Ziptrek Ecotours

April 9th, 2011 by

Ziptrek EcotoursThe ‘new kid on the block’ Ziptrek Ecotours is Queenstowns’ newest activity in 6 years. Based on Bob’s Peak next to Skyline Gondola they have cleverly blended into the mixed alpine forest a series of tree-houses and ziplines (or flying foxes) which uses only gravity to move through the course on a guided tour.

With a choice of two different tours, there is something in it for everyone. The Moa tour is great for families or those wanting a ‘taster’ of what ziplining is all about, the Kea is the high velocity, adrenaline pumping 6 zipline/flying fox tour that also has the steepest tree to tree flying fox in the world! This epic finale is 300m long and drops 30 storeys, top speeds on this line reach about 70km’s. As the tours are guided, there is no need to connect yourself onto the lines or control your speed or how to stop, an ingenious braking system (controlled by the guides) brings you to a gradual stop before entering the next tree house allowing us guests the freedom to do whatever we like while on the line, as for me my favourite was going upside down!

I was most surprised about the eco message that Ziptrek guides deliver while on the tour, to sum it up its subtle, entertaining, relevant and interesting….these people talk the talk and walk the walk of sustainability so much so that they have won awards for it. Ziptrek Ecotours’ recently won the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce Sustainability award and have also been Qualmarked endorsed with Enviro-Gold status.

This is a must do in Queenstown. They currently rank 4 on Trip Advisor out of 55 tours which shows how popular they have become after operating just over a year. The thrill of the ride and the scenery you see while up the gondola or during the ride is well worth the price. To find out more information or to book your ride visit Ziptrek Ecotours.

Queenstown Autumns Colours

March 27th, 2011 by

Queenstown changes to the colorful hues of red and gold during the Autumn months from 1 March to 31 May. The crisp cold nights create very vivid colours amongst the trees. This is where Arrowtown really becomes the painters dream landscape as the hills that are nestled against the town become a patchwork of colour. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival runs from 29 April to the 8 May to celebrate the transformation of the town from summer to winter.

This is the perfect time to visit Queenstown, relax amongst the stunning scenery and to feel the crunch of fallen leaves under your feet. The vineyards are busy with harvest at this time of year making a great time to do a wine trail and see the action taking place (or taste Central Otago’s tasty wines).

Queenstown’s many golf courses give the golfing fan a real treat. The quiet crowds during Autumn give you the chance to take the golf courses at your own pace and enjoy the Autumn colours. The Queenstown Golf Club is a perfect course to take in the Autumn surroundings and perhaps sink a hole in one.

This has to be one of the best times of year to visit Queenstown especially if your not a fan of the snow. The weather is still warm enough to do outdoor activities and the scenery has its own uniqueness that is unmatched during the rest of the year. As the crowds wait until the snow drops, many deals can be found around town in accommodation and activities. Don’t think about it, find that bargin and book!

Embracing the fear with NZONE Skydive

March 5th, 2011 by

NZONE

A skydive is perceived as many things to a lot of people, terrifying, death defying, crazy but my experience with NZONE Skydive for my sky-dive literally blew this misconception out of the proverbial sky. I describe it as exhilarating, liberating and the most mind blowing fun I have ever had in my life.

I went through the emotional roller-coaster that got me to the ‘Drop Zone’, I threw my inhibitions to the wind and booked my jump, followed by the realization of the gravity of my undertaking in said task – literally, I find myself imagining the experience and contemplating the physics as my mind tries to rationalize the fear……my heart is already in my throat.

Now that I’m at NZONE Skydive’s ‘Drop Zone’ located at their airfield just out of Queenstown, watching the instructor demonstrate how to ‘exit the aircraft’ and all I can think is ” I hope I don’t stuff it up”. Thankfully I have a trained jump-master attached to me to remind me of every instruction. At 12,000 feet above Lake Wakatipu I feel the cool high altitude alpine air enter the cabin of the plane – the door is open and the moment of truth has arrived. I cannot even begin to describe what free fall is like……no wonder the birds sing, I’m having the time of my life with the most spectacular view of the world below. Now that I’m relaxed in this state I start to have a bit of fun with my free falling photo/video guy and start posing – superman style, sleeping style, two thumbs up and yahoo-ing as loud as I can.

The chute is pulled and we slow down quickly, my video guy disappears as he plummets to the earth still then pulls his chute. I yell with delight, I suddenly realize how quiet it is now that the air isn’t rushing past us and I quickly apologize to my jump master for my lack of volume control. We float towards the ground again in a series of spins and turns and the landing was much easier than I had originally thought.

So how do I feel now back on solid ground……? On cloud nine! If there is only one crazy thing you could do in your life, make it a sky-dive with NZONE Skydive, trust me, you won’t regret it!
